La Fresne *** Marie de France
Le Fresne is a beautiful poem filed with emotions and details. I was able to identify better some characteristics on this poem than on the other one (Equitan). One of the main characteristics that we can see on Marie de France`s poems are the descriptions of adventure and love concepts that the Heroes of her poems have. Le Fresne is a poem that tells the story of twin girls that were separated from each other when they were born. One of the girls was left at a Church and a good soul created her as his niece calling her name Le Fresne. On the story, a lord fell in love with Le Fresne and she also fell in love with him. Knowing that he wouldn’t be able to marry her, he asked Le Fresne to be his lover. This poem can be related with the BBC documentary about Medieval Marriages. Men that fell in love for other woman would have the woman they love as a mistress or lover since the marriages were arranged by their families. The Weddings in the Medieval Era worked as a business treaty for the couple’s families that would be richer. The weddings were not based in love. On the poem, a lord fell in love with Le Fresne and she also fell in love with him. Knowing that he wouldn’t be able to marry her, he asked Le Fresne to be his lover.
