Laustic *** Marie de France
The main subject explored by Marie de France on this story is Adultery. We can see adultery as a subject also in Bisclavret. Marie emphasizes on Laustic her indignity with Adultery through her characters that she condemns during the story. The main characters on this story have a lot of jealousy that result on a betrayal on the ideals of their class. The love between the lovers affair is never consummated and forever separated as a result of the discovery of those affairs. Between the love of the two main characters is the symbol of the nightingale. She doesn’t say directly that the Lady’s husband is abusive but we can assume that he is giving some details on the story. I was under the impression that the lady and her neighbor fell in love on first sight resulted on cruel act by the husband in order to put an end on the affair. As we can see on Maries other lais the marriage between the main characters is not based on trust and respect. This can be explained giving the bad treatment and behavior between the couple. Marie is against the wife’s infidelity, her rebellion against the husband and love affair with her neighbor. As we can see through Marie’s lais love should be respected by both sides on the marriage and should reflect on the happiness that it brings to the couple. The wife is the main character on the story as well as the desire of both men. There is contrast on the end between the actions based on emotions and the actions the respect the codes of behavior.
